A 10-visit daycare pass can look cheaper than paying one day at a time. But the useful question is not “What is the discount?” It is “How many visits will we actually complete before the pass expires?” This planner keeps the expiry window, likely missed days, and pass-only fees in the same comparison.
Use this as a quote-comparison worksheet, not a recommendation for a particular facility. The example prices are fictional. Confirm current prices, eligibility, cancellation rules, health requirements, supervision practices, and pickup charges directly with each provider.

The pass-plan total includes the pass, the pass-only fee, and pay-per-visit charges for any completed visits beyond the included visits. It does not include charges common to both options because those do not change the comparison.
How the worksheet reaches the result
- Scheduled visits = visits per week × validity days ÷ 7.
- Completed visits = scheduled visits − expected missed visits, never below zero.
- Pay-per-visit total = completed visits × single-visit price.
- Pass-plan total = pass price + pass-only fee + any visits above the pass allowance × single-visit price.
- Break-even visits = the first whole completed visit at which the pass price and pass-only fee no longer exceed pay-as-you-go.
The calculator allows a fractional expected visit because it is a planning average. In real life you will complete a whole number. Run the tool again with the lower and higher whole numbers around the result. That two-row check is often more useful than treating one forecast as certain.
Three tests before buying a pass
| Test | What to calculate or ask | When pay per visit may be safer |
|---|---|---|
| Expiry fit | Compare the required weekly pace with the weeks you will actually be in town. | Your work schedule, travel, or care needs change often. |
| Missed-day exposure | Run one optimistic and one cautious number for cancellations, holidays, or days you choose another care option. | Unused visits expire and cannot be transferred, paused, or credited. |
| Quote completeness | Add pass-only enrollment or assessment fees. Ask whether taxes, late pickup, transport, or reservation fees apply equally to both choices. | The pass discount disappears after required add-ons. |
A fictional two-schedule example
Suppose a single visit is $38 and a 10-visit, 30-day pass is $320 plus a $20 pass-only fee. These are fictional numbers, not a market quote.
| Household plan | Completed visits | Pay per visit | Pass plan | Decision signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steady schedule | 10 | $380 | $340 | Pass is $40 lower before common charges. |
| Interrupted schedule | 7 | $266 | $340 | Pay per visit is $74 lower; three pass visits go unused. |
The service did not change; attendance did. That is why a headline “per-visit discount” is not enough. Your pass is only valuable when the validity window matches the care calendar.
Quote questions that prevent an apples-to-oranges comparison
- When does the validity clock start: purchase, first booking, or first completed visit?
- Do cancellations consume a visit, and does the answer change by notice period?
- Can unused visits roll over, pause, transfer to another dog, or receive account credit?
- Is an initial assessment charged once, charged again after a long gap, or bundled with the pass?
- Does a pass guarantee space, or must every visit still be reserved?
- Are transport, early drop-off, late pickup, meals, or medication support quoted separately?
- What happens if the provider closes or changes hours during the validity window?
Build the full weekly care budget
Daycare is only one line in a care plan. If you also use home visits, compare the dog walker weekly cost framework. For an overnight option, use the boarding quote comparator. If drop-off transport changes the real price, map it with the dog transport cost planner. Shared households should also keep one source of truth for meals and handoffs with the seven-day shared-care planner.
